Unlike its counterpart on Ellis Island, which existed to welcome European immigrants, Angel Island existed to exclude Asian immigrants. Only 20% of immigrants arriving on Ellis Island were detained, while 60% of immigrants who arrived at Angel Island were detained, often for weeks, months, or even years.
